A Constellation Guide to the Sixth Extinction is a web VR data visualization project on the modern, man-made episode of mass extinction. The visualization incorporates species datas from IUCN Redlist to map out the ongoing effects of anthropence. The experience aims to show the scale, speed and solution of the 6th mass extinction, to raise awareness and provide resources for people to get involved.
This project was complete for a fellowship at A+E Networks History Channel. The network posed us the question of how might we show history in innovative ways. I chose the topic of anthropence, to show how natural and human history correlates with each other.
I spent my first month of fellowship researching on the topic, specifically on how human activities have driven the extinction event. Media refers to environmental issue as the "wicked problem". So my first challenge was how might I present the findings in an non intrusive way. I decided to go with webVR data visualization after some research on precedents, and create an inviting nature landscape for people to explore.
Then I dove into the dataset to determine best ways to categorize information. After pulling all species datas, I was able to categorize them into 10 different animal classes and 4 assessment categories. After cleaning the data, I decided to include common names and historical assessment on each species to create empathy and emphasize on the speed of occurrence of extinction events.
